Fran Callen

Drawing from life is Fran Callen’s inspiration. Her energetic works capture people, moments, human behavior, social interaction and relationships. Callen is an artist who immerses herself in the performance of life, in the thick of the action, aiming to capture fleeting moments, the energy and absurdities of daily existence. Working in pencil, oils and watercolours - the everyday spills onto her works, incorporating whatever might be around her at the time such as beer or tea. Her ‘Tabletop’ drawings began as an exploration of new-motherhood, domesticity and the struggle to find the ultimate art/mother balance. Initially records of domestic rituals, they also venture to other places. Objects are drawn as they pass across the surface in daily moments. Wine, sap, plants and salt, for example, become mark-making mediums. Drawings evolve into a palimpsest of moments, a record of time passing. The narrative of the artworks’ own history is revealed within its layers. View Fran Callen's CV here. Representation BMG Art
