Alison Mitchell

Alison Mitchell Hannaford is a visual artist based near Riverton in regional South Australia. She works predominantly in watercolour and oils, responding to the seasonal changes of her environment, underpinned by careful observation from life and informed by her studies in Anthropology and Asian Art History, University of Adelaide, BA Honours. “My work centres on the still life tradition of domestic objects intentionally arranged and composed in the studio. It is an old tradition, deeply embedded in the practice of carefully observed painting from life. It demands an attentiveness to the agency of art making – to the fall of light, the intersection of shadows, to elation and uncertainty, and, particularly, to the weft and warp of what is known and what is seen.”
