Originally from Southern California, Cindy Durant is now based in Penong on the far west coast of South Australia. As a multimedia designer/artist/maker/teacher, Cindy finds her inspiration in the rugged beauty surrounding her coastal home. Patterns, colours, textures; the fine lace like markings on coral or an urchin and shadows playing across the ground are details that continue to intrigue and fascinate her.
Cindy works in media including glass, vitreous enamel on metal, precious & non-precious metals, mixed media jewellery, and more recently paper & fabric. Her work can range from small-scale jewellery through to large installations. Cindy uses many techniques including kiln-forming, pate de verre, lamp-working, and screen printing just to name a few. She is a passionate maker that enjoys exploring new ideas, media, and techniques to see what can happen. She has dedicated her life to being an artist/craftsperson, developing her skills and also loves to teach to share those skills. Cindy has an inquisitive mind so anything is possible.
Over the years Cindy has worked in many fields. Her hands are her greatest tools and she loves to use them. In her earlier life she has worked professionally with wood, yacht work, sewing and cooking. She developed her great love for glass in the mid 1980’s. Cindy is mainly self-taught and with a desire to express the colours of the sea in her glass, has developed techniques such as applying layers of powdered glass to create luminous marine hues. She now sells her unique kiln formed glass, jewellery and objects throughout Australia and is included in collections both in Australia and overseas.
