Brown Falconer Architects (Adelaide Studio) and Guildhouse are excited to announce the launch of the inaugural Brown Falconer + Guildhouse Artist in Residence program in 2024.

This opportunity is designed from our shared values and a commitment to amplify South Australian artists, craftspeople and designers, and support sustainable and expanded cross-disciplinary practices.

As one of the longest standing architectural practices in Adelaide, Brown Falconer has an established and ongoing commitment for research, collaboration and knowledge driven design since 1945. This opportunity celebrates the process, impact and legacy of cross-sectional, multidisciplinary exchange to the creative state of South Australia.

The Artist in Residence will undertake a 6-month artist-led research period leading to the presentation of new work(s). This opportunity fosters the meaningful exchange of specialist knowledge across disciplines and specialties.

The presentation of new works will be accompanied by a launch event during History Festival 2025 hosted by Brown Falconer Architects (Adelaide Studio) and Guildhouse. This event is an opportunity to showcase the Artist in Residence and celebrate enquiry, experimentation and innovation.

The Art in Residence program: 
  • Supports an active exchange and engagement between the AiR and Brown Falconer team; including encouraging cross disciplinary specialist knowledge and/or skills sharing.
  • The AiR is a paid opportunity to engage with independent, self-directed research in a supported environment – whether exploring, expanding or deepening existing area(s) of research or embarking on new line(s) of enquiry.
  • The AiR will lead a practical hands-on workshop with the Brown Falconer team (supported by Guildhouse, as needed).
  • Support the presentation and sharing of existing work(s) from the AiR folio with new and expanded audiences for the research period.
  • An opportunity for the AiR to create new works for presentation and selling opportunities outside of the gallery space (during History Festival 2025).
  • Provide the AiR a desk or space for research, development and / or collaboration.
  • Uniquely, the large serviceable private, partially sheltered courtyard is readily available as a primary working space; ideal for material, scale and process experimentation and research.
    Eligibility
    • Applicants  must be a current Guildhouse financial member (Accredited/Community) at time of application.
    • People enrolled in formal tertiary studies are not eligible to apply for Guildhouse programs. We see this as an ongoing commitment to equitability of learning opportunities throughout artists professional practice careers and as a duty of care in artist well-being when managing capacities of time, energy and commitment.
    • Applicants must be South Australia residents and residing in South Australia at the time of application and throughout the duration of the residency. Note this does not exclude people who are not permanent Australia residents or citizens.
    Selection Criteria 
    • South Australian visual arts, craft and design practitioners with an interest in interdisciplinary practice, public space, architecture and design at any stage of their career.
    • Artistic merit.  
    • Collaborative approach to research methodology and/or practice.
    • Early career artists will be required to have the confidence to work independently.
    • Genuinely curious in the role of creative and innovative multidisciplinary architectural and interior design practices within contemporary culture.
    • Seeking meaningful conversation / research / collaboration.
    • Interdisciplinary in their approach to research and making.
    • Seeking an opportunity to present works either in process or completed, outside of the gallery setting.
    Artwork specifics  
    • Work for presentation will need to be suitable for the Brown Falconer space and ready for presentation – this may include works for hanging, objects on open display or objects and/or installations in the private external courtyard.   
    • Existing works or works in progress will be displayed for up to four months during the intensive residency activity within the Brown Falconer studio. 
    • New artworks created as part of the residency will then be shown as part of History Festival 2025, for up to a period of 3 months.
    • All new artworks will be available for purchase. The sale price will be determined between Guildhouse and the artist, with a Brown Falconer commission of 30%.  
    • In the event that the artwork remains unsold, it will be returned to the artist.  
    • The artist will be supported by Guildhouse to install/deinstall artworks. 
    Artist Fees: 
    • The Artist in Residence will receive artist fees at $3,000*, research space, access to collaborative opportunities with Brown Falconer team and presentation offerings.*including superannuation and material costs.

    Important Dates: 
    • Call out closes – Monday 25 October, 10am
    • Applicants must be abailable to interview during the week of Monday 2 – Friday 6 December and the successful applicant must be available to begin the residency week beginning Monday 9 December.
    • Installation of existing works (with support from Guildhouse) –  as soon as possible in beginning the residency, prefer no later than Monday 16 December.
    • Research/devlopment of new works – 9 December 2024 – Early May 2025
    • Presentation – May 2025 TBC
    • Close of residency – June 2025 TBC
