Thomas Readett has been a drawer his entire life ever since he was a child, wanting to further his career as a professional artist he began study at Adelaide Central School of Art in 2011, and it was then he began painting. This is now one of his main practices among others. Thomas graduated his study at Adelaide Central School of Art completing his Associate Degree and Bachelor of Visual Arts Degree (BVA) in 2015 mastering in Painting and Video work.
Thomas is also an established large-scale mural artist, working on numerous mural projects, public sculpture and more. Thomas has worked with most councils across SA, the SA Government, CreateSA, and has also worked with arts organisations such as, the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA), Adelaide Central School of Art (ACSA), Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) and many more.

How would you describe your practice in 5 words?

Expressive. Real. Big. Cultural. Lived Experience.

How have you arrived at this point in your practice?

Hard work and dedication. I have been a drawer my whole life and ever since I was a kid I said I wanted to be an artist when I grew up. I have lived everyday chipping away at goals to make my dream become a reality. From putting myself out there in exhibitions, to Visual Arts studies at Adelaide Central School of Art and Rob Gutteridge School of Classical Realism, to networking and working within Galleries and arts organisations and so much more behind the scenes.

What does a day in the studio entail?

Normally the day begins with admin, emails, designs, contracts, or phone calls. Sometimes it is purchasing materials but one thing that is always consistent is loud music and painting! Followed by a coffee or 3.

Is there an artistic medium you’re wanting to try?

Yes, glass blowing. I have tried almost every material from drawing, painting, sculpture, and media but glass blowing is one thing I haven’t tried which I would love to. It’s my goal for the next year.

Is there a piece of advice you would share with your creative peers?

Nothing good comes easily. Most of the success (or how I measure success) has come from risk taking outside of my comfort zone and proving to myself I can achieve whatever I set my mind too. Sometimes things seem out of reach but if you shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you will land among the stars.
