The web is a powerful marketing and communication tool. As a creative practitioner, establishing a profile online can increase your audience, extend your impact and break geographic constraints. But it’s not always easy to get noticed and given the multitude of tools and services available it can be difficult to know where to start. Learn how to make the web work for you, engage in the wider arts community and build your audience in this workshop presented by social media consultant Tom Williamson and creative entrepreneur Amanda Matulick.

12noon – 1pm Social and digital media: an introduction

Social media is word of mouth with wings. Over 12 million Australians are on Facebook, and with so many people instagramming their dinner and tweeting every thought, it’s a wonder any work gets done. If you think social media is just a fad or you simply don’t “get it”, then this is for you.

In this session Tom Williamson will present a number of options from the plethora of social media platforms and low-cost website solutions available to you to help your creative practice reach more people.

Amanda Matulick and her sweetheart Daniel Harland are the owners of a niche startup Café and Gift Shop E for Ethel. Adopting the title ‘geek-in-learning’ in her past life as a PR consultant in digital media and arts innovation fields, Amanda’s passion for digital communication and online environments translates directly into building a community around the business that imparts experience and value to those who connect with it. Amanda is fascinated by the ability to share and connect in the social media world and will be describing how she maximizes her online communities for the greater good of her brand.

Social media has fast-become mainstream. The increasing use of web-based applications has changed the way we communicate with existing clients, potential clients and fellow artists. Tools such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Flickr allow us to be more creative in the way we connect with people, while e-commerce websites like madeit.com.au andetsy.com help close the online ecosystem loop and provide a return on your investment.

Having been introduced to the various platforms you can use to create an online profile and hearing how Amanda exploits the online realm to her advantage, Tom will help you uncover the things in your business that social media can shine a light on – and give you the tips, tools and techniques to connect with the people that matter, and deal with those who don’t.
