Guildhouse Professional Services: Jasmine Crisp Mural

Guildhouse was recently engaged by Grenfell Car Park to commission a mural artwork on the North-Eastern ground entrance wall of Grenfell Car Park located at 90-100 Grenfell Street.

The brief was for the artwork to relate to the site, reinvigorating the entrance wall with an enticing South Australian local concept. Following a limited selection process, Jasmine Crisp’s concept was shortlisted for the commission.

Jasmine Crisp is a painter and muralist from Adelaide with a Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours) from Adelaide Central School of Art. Her characteristic practice utilises her traditional painting training to produce narrative fuelled imagery from personal life experiences.

For this mural Crisp worked in collaboration with Adelaide based photographer Kieran Hookway, who has spent his creative career photographing the streets of Adelaide and its surrounds. Together they selected a series of Hookway’s photographs (taken in the Adelaide CBD in recent years) to create a sentimental montage of imagery inspired by the sensation of movement and memories through Adelaide as individual observers. Combining these reference images with her contemporary approach to painting and compositional assemblage, the work depicts transitions of time (day/night and past/present), to indicate the continuous movement of locals making up Adelaide’s lived experience ‘from then til now’.
