Self-initiated residencies enable artists to create their own opportunities to access specific communities and places. Learn about the intricacies of self-initiated artist residencies with Berenice Carrington.

These residencies may tap into existing artist studios and accommodation or the artist may adapt a site to host their ‘pop-up’ residency. Berenice has done both. With funding from Arts SA, Berenice used The Booth (an artist run space) in the Shetlands, as a base from which to engage with Shetland Islanders about their experiences of economic development in the 1980s. Prior to this, Berenice installed a ‘pop-up’ residency in her mother’s house in Prospect to explore the detritus of family life.
