Good Mother
Jess Taylor
20 July – 16 October
Jess Taylor explores her fascination with fictional horror primarily through digital methods of making. Using her own image and body exclusively, Taylor’s work presents transgressive and repressed feminine experiences, reflecting womanhood as complex and contradictory. Good Mother is a series of five 3D printed sculptures created in 2018. The work explores often-contradictory experiences of motherhood, from feelings of entrapment to possessiveness, frustration, sadness, and longing to love, joy and empowerment. Utilising symbolism of growth, death and fertility and teasing out societal narratives surrounding the very fraught ‘good mother’, these works seek to explore motherhood as something profoundly ambivalent – monstrous in every sense of the word.
