CSIRO Waite Campus Artist in Residence: for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists
CSIRO and Guildhouse have come together to present the CSIRO Waite Campus Artist in Residence program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.
This new collaboration created a funded artist-in-residence opportunity for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artist designed to facilitate meaningful cross cultural exchange between artists and scientists.
The residency included a studio space on site at the CSIRO Waite campus, allowing for the artist and scientists to engage in ongoing and regular conversations about agriculture, culture and science. This exchange of knowledge culminated in an outdoor mural situated on site.

2020 CSIRO Artist in Residence Ngarrindjeri and Narangga painter Cedric Varcoe is experienced in both community education and consultation, and widely regarded for his extensive experience in mural design.
Cedric’s approach to the mural was one of collaborative storytelling, engaging with staff to celebrate the relationship between indigenous knowledge and scientific research.

Illustrates the shared knowledge between Cedric and CSIRO Waite campus staff over the time of his residency, and the shared conversations around soil health and land use.
