CSIRO and Guildhouse are thrilled to announce the inaugural CSIRO Waite Campus Artist in Residence program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, designers and craftspeople.
This new collaboration creates a funded artist-in-residence opportunity for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artist designed to facilitate cross cultural exchange between artists and scientists. The residency will include a $7,500 artist fee, a studio space on site at the CSIRO Waite campus and will culminate in an outdoor mural situated on site.

CSIRO’s research at the Waite Campus provides innovation for Australia’s agricultural, land, water and minerals sectors.
Agriculture | Our research at the Waite Campus focuses on integrated agricultural systems, wine grapes and horticulture, genomic science for crop performance, and soil carbon and nutrient cycling.
Land and Water | Our research at the Waite Campus focuses on environmental resilience, environmental toxicology, managing water ecosystems, water in the resources sector, economics, productivity and sustainability.
Mineral Resources | Our research at the Waite Campus focuses on intelligent mining and resource management.
The Residency program has wide support from the CSIRO leadership team, and is being led by Nina Welti, Research Scientist.
Application Process
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists working in visual art, craft or design are invited to apply for this residency.
This is a funded opportunity which includes access to a studio space at the CSIRO Waite Campus for up to 12 months (minimum 6 months) as well as an artist fee $7,500 to develop a new public work for the campus.
The selected artist is invited to engage with CSIRO’s research teams and attend CSIRO staff events (including opportunities to travel interstate) taking place during the course of their residency.
Applications can take the form of a formal written application, a short verbal application via video or a conversation with Guildhouse staff; we are open to working with the applicant to develop an accessible application process.
Artists are encouraged to think ambitiously, and are required to discuss the project with the Programs Officer Julianne Pierce via 8410 1822 or programs@guildhouse.org.au.
Eligibility
This opportunity is open to:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visual artists, craftspeople and designers living in South Australia
- Early to mid-career practitioners
- Artists with a demonstrated interest in creating linkages and exchange with researchers and scientists
- Artists available to work within a designated studio on site at the CSIRO Waite campus
- Artists with painting or mural experience
Selection Process
The selection panel will be comprised of representatives from Guildhouse, CSIRO and an independent artist.
Notification
Applicants will be notified in August 2020 about the outcome of your application with a view to starting the residency in September 2020.
